We know that trees are good for us. They deliver many benefits including improved mental and physical health, shade and shelter, nature-rich neighbourhoods, better air quality, and attractive places to live, learn, play and do business. Neighbourhoods with fewer trees often face higher rates of respiratory illness, heat related health issues and mental health challenges.

Tree equity is the principle that everyone, regardless of background or circumstances, should have full and fair access to the benefits of trees, close to where they live and work.

Across Scotland there are big variations in neighbourhood tree cover. Some areas have almost no trees. It’s often communities already facing socio-economic and environmental challenges that are missing out.

Tree Equity Score UK

Tree Equity Score UK is a freely accessible, easy to use, online tool. It helps to identify the urban areas that could benefit most from more trees. It inspires and informs action to get more trees into the hearts of our communities, where we need them most.

Tree Equity Score UK was developed by the Woodland Trust in partnership with American Forests and the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare. It currently covers all settlements with a population over 10,000. However, work is ongoing to extend coverage in Scotland to all settlements with a population over 3000. The tool is updated annually and offers the user a range of data filtering, reporting and download options.
